Blackjack Rules
Blackjack is a fun and easy casino card game. Since its introduction to land-based casinos in the 20th century, the game has become popular. Before you try to win big at Blackjack, know the rules. More tips are underneath.
Blackjack
Learn Blackjack in minutes. Table rules and betting possibilities vary each version. We provide many variants of Single Player and Multi-Player Blackjack.
Game Instructions
Each game of Blackjack begins with participants placing bets in their ‘boxes’ Each table shows the minimum and maximum stakes players can gamble, and bet sizes can be selected by clicking on the chip icon. After all bets are put, players receive two face-up cards in front of their boxes and the dealer receives either one card (European style) or two cards with one face-up and one face-down (Atlantic City style).
- Blackjack involves beating the dealer. You must beat the dealer’s hand without going above 21. If the dealer’s hand is over 21, you can win with a score lower than 22. When your hand totals 22 or more, you ‘bust’ and lose all bets.
- When prompted, draw cards to boost your hand’s value. The dealer will complete their hand when you’re done. How they do it varies per Blackjack version. Understanding each variant’s rules is key to making strategic judgments in each hand.
- Blackjack’s best hand is ‘Blackjack’ The game’s best hand pays up to 3:2 on your wager and consists of an ace and any ten-valued card (jack, queen, king, or ten). Blackjack is unbeatable if dealt with your first two cards. If the dealer has Blackjack, it ties.
- Tens, jacks, queens, and kings all have 10 in Blackjack. Aces might be 1 or 11 (you can choose which). An ace and four can be worth 5 or 15. When an ace is worth 11, the higher total is called a’soft’ total, so 15 is a’soft 15′. On a soft hand, players can hit or double without busting. Soft hands don’t always improve after being hit.
- Blackjack winning hands pay even money (1:1), commonly called ‘evens’ If you bet 20 chips and win, you’ll get 20 chips in profit. If the dealer doesn’t get Blackjack while you’re playing a 3:2 game, you’ll win 30 chips on top of your original wager.
- Push is when your hand binds the dealer’s. You’ll get your bet back, but no more money. If you lose, the house gets your bet. Below and on each game variant’s rules page are exceptions to these main principles.
After the dealer finishes, you get paid. Read each variant’s rules to check for variances, as the dealer’s play and pay regulations are tight and often differ. Variants differ on whether the dealer draws on a soft 17. In some variations, the dealer must stand on a soft 17.
Best Real Play Casino Sites
Even though real money online gambling is a fun way to play your favourite casino games, you can play many of the most well-known games for free. This is a great way to try out a variety of games. All of our featured casino sites host the following list of casino games.
Split, double down, surrender
Blackjack isn’t merely drawing cards or keeping what you’re dealt. Sometimes you’ll have more possibilities. The initial two cards determine these alternatives.
Optional:
Splitting
Splitting a hand gives you more opportunities to win. When you split a hand, you can bet the same amount on the next hand. When can splits occur?
You start with two equal-rank cards (king-ten, six-six and so on). Both hands are played independently to win, lose, or push.
You can split equal cards multiple times in some blackjack variants.
Splitting aces has limitations. Almost all blackjack versions allow only one card to be drawn when you split two aces, limiting your possibilities of hitting, splitting, or double down.
Increasing
Double Down lets you double your bet in specific situations.
After the first two cards, you can add an equal-to-your-starting-bet gamble and earn one more card to improve your hand.
In some games, doubling after splitting is allowed. Other factors must be considered:
- After splitting a hand, you can double down, placing another bet.
- If you double down after a split, the normal rules apply.
Surrender
In some Blackjack games, surrendering allows you to forfeit your hand and collect back 50% of your initial wager if you think you’ll lose to the dealer.
Optional gameplay
Each round of Blackjack requires judgments. Your decisions depend on the cards you’re given and the game version. Blackjack alternatives include:
Hit
Request more cards to strengthen your hand (s). Draw cards until your hand totals 21 or more.
Stand
When your hand totals 21 or less, you can stand and not risk over 21.
Split
When your initial two cards have same value (eight-eight, jack-ten, etc. ), you can make further wagers (equivalent to the starting bet) and generate a second hand to play against the dealer.
Two-up
You can place an equal-to-your-starting-bet gamble for one more card, then stand.
Surrender
In some games, you can forfeit half your bet to terminate the hand.
Insurance
When the dealer’s initial card is an ace, you can spend half your original bet and get a 2:1 reward if the dealer strikes Blackjack. You break even if the dealer has Blackjack.
Cash
Even money is a blackjack insurance bet if the dealer has an ace. Even money pays 1:1 whether the dealer has Blackjack or not. The hand plays out normally if you don’t take even money.
Protecting UI
It’s important to be able to make your preferred choices in Blackjack. Internet connection difficulties and misclicks can affect gameplay. While we can’t anticipate every difficulty, our software has a variety of precautions to help players who make unintended or accidental judgments beyond typical play.
If you choose one of the following, our software will remind you to double-check your choice:
- High 17s
- Lower 11
- Hard 12 and up
